When I look at the statistics
regarding the links visited on my website, I notice that
few people look at the links entitled: « Dolphin
Dictionary » and « Whale
Dictionary ». This is a shame/pity since/considering
the glossaries may serve as useful aids in obtaining news
and/or references about cetaceans.
I've been working on
improving and expanding these two files for over 10 years
in hopes of facilitating access to the public.
But how does it work?
All you have to do is
select a word to quickly obtain information on that subject.
- For example, take the
word « Rehabilitation
» found in either of the « Dictionary of whales
and/or dolphins» file. It happens to be found
in the « Dictionary for Dolphins ».
Using Word ,
you click on « Edition/Edition » then «
Rechecher/Research », type in your word then click
« Mot entire/Entire Word » and finally «
Suivant/Next ». You will obtain directly
the word in alphabetical order! Very simple! From
there, you'll obtain all the references that I've obtained
through my readings (including books, journal articles,
reports, ….) to help you in your research. You'll
find the page number, title of the book in italics,
the author and the date edited.
-Take a second example.
The word referring to
the whale species « Mesoplodon densirostris
» (Blainville's beaked whale) in
the « Dictionary for Whales ». You
go to« Edition » then « Rechercher»,
type in your word then click « Mot entier
» and finally « Suivant ». The
word appears.
The goal is to share
recent or archival information and data about a word for
which you would like results. I have yet to meet anyone
who has had the idea to create such an online database.
It simplifies your efforts when searching for a source
at the library, bookstore, or ordering certain
documents.
Clearly, it was my choice
to decide which word would be in either of the glossaries.
I did not want to have the same word in the two
glossaries. Or if the same word does appear in
both dictionaries it is because the information refers
specifically to a certain type of whale or dolphin. Furthermore,
this represents my personal bibliography and not someone
else's. Therefore, clearly you cannot have all
the noted references. It's up to you to choose
them.
I apologize in advance
for the fact that the files are on PC (Word) and not MAC.
If a page number is wrong, or any of the information
is erroneous or if I forgot any reference detail in the
book, please let me know and I will correct it immediately.
In any case, know that
this tool will help you to advance your knowledge and
save time.
Happy researching!
